Keep track of till deadlines.

Which notification deadline applies to you now? Which dates appear only in the government draft so far? Find deadlines, conditions and the relevant original sources here.

First the event. Then the deadline.

A timeline helps with register notification: what was acquired, what was taken out of service and what has already been reported? Start with the specific event.

Current law

Register notification

Electronic recording systems subject to notification generally have a deadline of one month after acquisition or decommissioning. Assign the relevant event and date to each system. Special and transitional provisions must be checked separately for your case.

Official notification procedure

Notification is made per business establishment and covers its electronic recording systems. An equipment list without location assignments may therefore leave preparation unclear. Compare your documents with the details and guidance in the official ELSTER procedure.

Clarify jurisdiction

Note who checks the circumstances, who handles the notification and where the evidence is filed. This task list helps with follow-up questions. It neither calculates a personal deadline nor confirms that a notification was complete or submitted on time.

2026, 2027 or 2028: understanding the dates in the cash-register draft

The reference year, proposed start of an obligation and current cash-register notification are different questions. Here is how to prepare a verifiable timeline.

What is planned for 2028
  1. Turnover in 2026
For the threshold exceedance in 2026 addressed by the draft, a start on 1 January 2028 is proposed.

  2. First exceedance in a later year
For first-time exceedances in 2027 or later, the draft generally provides for 1 July of the following year.

  3. Current cash-register notification
This notification must not simply be postponed until a possible new obligation from 2028.

Practical recommendations

Gather your documents.

Choose a purchase or decommissioning event. Gather the related documents and clarify who can supply any further details.

Register notification
  1. Gather available TSE and notification documents for every cash-register system in use.

  2. Gather TSE documents, serial numbers and existing notifications to the tax office.

  3. Technical protection and notification to the tax office are separate tasks. Explicitly clarify who submits the notification and where the evidence is kept.

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need to buy a new register now?

The plans for 2028 do not create a blanket obligation to buy a register today. What matters is the rules already in force, your business processes and whether your existing register is suitable. Our check helps you separate these questions.

Has the cash-register obligation for 2028 already been enacted?

On 23 September 2026, the Federal Cabinet approved a government draft. This is a step in the legislative process, not yet an enacted law. Changes remain possible.

Can I use the check without signing up?

Yes. You receive guidance directly on the page. Your answers stay in your browser during the check. They are not copied into a contact form.
